Located on Port Royal Island, one of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Beaufort was one of the wealthiest towns in the United States before the Civil War. In 1860 the first draft of the Ordinance of Secession of South Carolina from the Union was drawn up in a Beaufort House on Craven Street. Shortly following, in 1861, Beaufort was invaded by and occupied by the largest invasion in U.S. Navy history up until Normandy. Occupation by the Union Army spared Beaufort the burning and destruction suffered by many Southern towns and the entire 304 acre original town is now designated a National Historic Landmark District.

Recently, Beaufort has been the setting for many major motion pictures, the Big Chill, The Great Santini, Prince of Tides, and Forest Gump to name a few. With a normal tidal variation of 8 feet, one of the largest on the Atlantic coast, Beaufort is surrounded by picturesque and ever changing salt marshes.

Down the road is Savannah, Georgia, with its historic squares and period architecture. A favorite tourist destination, Savannah offers art, boutiques, beaches, and some of the best dining in the South.

After the Ball we will head to Charleston for further immersion in history, charm, and fine cuisine.
