The Monday tour was unusual.  after departing the lodge, we headed through South Carolina and towards the Tennessee border to Deal's Gap, a motorcycle resort on the "Tail of the Dragon".  The "Tail" is an infamous bikers road, 318 curves in 11 miles.  We ate lunch in the bikers bar and then drove the Blue Ridge parkway to the Balsam Inn, a turn of the century resort.

Packing up at "The Ridges".  The is always more to carry and to pack.
A quick coffee stop at the local McDonnalds.
George Orndorff driving over Fugitive bridge.
Rhett Lamb looking back from Fugitive Bridge to Cheoah Dam (part of the TVA).

We stopped to stretch our legs and gather everyone.
Deals Gap.  Most drove the "Tail" several times; exciting road of VERY tight turns.  I have never see this many 180 degree switch back turns.
Map of the "Tail".  (Not many driving pictures, the driver was too busy.)
Jim & Betty Villers in front of the "Tree of Shame".  It is covered with broken motorcycle parts.

Marilyn &Tom Hamilton picnic with Bill Johnson and Cheri Ferbrache.
Walt Puryear approaching the Balsam Inn.

The Balsam Inn was build when vacationers came by train.
The parking lot, Balsam mountain is in the background.
The front porch was the place to be.  We broke out the coolers of beer and talked about driving the "Tail"
