Historic Tavern Dining at the Convention

Colonial Williamsburg operates three taverns that offer the experience of colonial dinning with food of the period and costumed strolling mistrials.  Each of the Taverns offers different menu options.

In planning the convention, I was unable to block reservations with the flexibility to satisfy individual tastes.  So I am asking each attendee to make their own dinner reservations.  This will allow choosing dinner entrees from the Tavern Menu.

Please choose from one of the following three taverns.  The complete menus of each tavern are on our club web site.   The walking tour will end about 5:30 so plan your dinner reservations between 5:30 and 6:30, Friday October 19.   Please make your dinner reservations for a party of four (we will be able to combine parties and reservations after arrival) by calling Colonial Williamsburg Dinning service at 800-828-3767.

Kings Arms Tavern (My favorite for beef): (full menu)

This genteel colonial tavern catered to Virginia’s gentry and the politically influential before, during, and after the Revolution.  Those who dine at King’s Arms Tavern will have such entrees as Roast Prime Rib of Beef, Cavalier’s Lamb, Seared Pumpkin-Crusted Salmon, or the ever-popular Mrs. Vobe’s Tavern Dinner that includes Peanut Soup, Honey and cider-cured Smithfield Pork Porterhouse and Williamsburg Pecan Pie, from which to choose.

Christiania Campbell's Tavern (Betty's favorite for seafood): (full menu)

This historic tavern, George Washington’s personal favorite, offers such seafood specialties as: Sherried Crab Stew, Crab Cakes, Sea Pye (a dish of crab, fin fish, shrimp, lobster and cream), Gloucester Chicken, and Beef Filet and Buttered Shrimp. The entrees are complemented by long-time tavern favorites: Campbell’s Cabbage Slaw, Spoon Bread and Sweet Potato Muffins.

Shields Tavern: (full menu)
In the early 18th century, Shields Tavern was a popular spot for the colony’s middling sort and lower gentry.  The tavern’s warm and rustic interior is historically accurate, the balladeers treat you to a tune and much of the menu is based on authentic recipes.  The menus at Shields range from a smoked duck and sausage gumbo to stuffed veal collops braised in red wine. Finish off a meal with pumpkin bread pudding or a syllabub, an 18th-century dessert-style drink.
