Ackermans, Villers's and Hays on Top of Independence Pass on the ralley.

Map of day one, from Leadville, lunch at Redstone, visit to Marble and ending in Paonia.
First "pause" was at Twin Lakes for a view of the mountains and lakes.
The line of cars at Twin Lakes on the first of the many gravel roads.
We made it to the top of Independence Pass, enjoyed the various views and looked unsuccessfully for a rest room.
It took Robby a little longer to make the grade as he had the first of several vapor locks (he was not alone).
On the road behind Sheri Johnson and John Jacobson, we headed down from Independence pass.
We drove through Aspen and on to Redstone  for Lunch at a Swiss Chalet Hotel in this small arts and crafts town.
With lunch was the awards for the "rally" results. The "Back Roads" Tour began as several headed for the airport.
We had to have a photo shoot of the cars in the driveway before leaving.
Next stop was Marble, where we found an encampment of marble carvers.
Our tour guide explained that carvers came for one or more nine day sessions of carving marble in the woods
The wires went everywhere from this one electrical box.  What would OSHA say if they inspected?
There were about 60 carvers from all over the world working in the heat.
Here is a large marble carving being made in the woods.  We didn't see how they moved the heavy stones
We were told that we could visit the quarry.  Just a "mile" up a gravel road and a short hike.
Five miles up a STEEP road and another mile on a nice trail, the climb began.
Over the "reject" marble an a  difficult hike up the hill, we found the quarry.
Inside was a very deep pit.  The active shaft was a horizontal cut to the left.
The quarry provides pure white marble used in Washington DC monuments.
We had to have a "picture at the top" to record our accomplishments.
The final drive was over another pass and down into a valley to Paonia and dinner at a chinese restaurant.
